History of EONS v1

EONS V1.2 (November, 2012):
Bugs Fixes: None. 
- Input stimulation: added ability to enter a custom user-defined protocol
- Added ability to use an action potential as input (model described in Izikevich, 2003)
- Added ability to use a ‘simplified’ presynaptic terminal which significantly speeds up calculations (up to a factor of 5). The presynaptic terminal still contains the same elements (calcium channels, calcium pumps and buffering mechanisms), but in a more integrated manner to ensure faster calculations.
- Presynaptic neurotransmitter release can be either deterministic or probabilistic (probability of release can be varied)
- Addition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors both pre- and postsynaptically
- Addition of metabotropic receptor on the postsynaptic membrane and subsequent second-messenger cascade
- Addition of a glial cell to form a tripartite synapse in which glial glutamate transporters are inserted and modulate neurotransmitter concentration in the cleft.
- Write to files (in matlab, gnuplot/scilab or text format)
- Batch: ability to launch multiple simulations with automatic sequential changes of parameters values. Results can be saved in file format for storage and analysis.
- Simulations are 5 to 10 times faster (addition of multiple numerical algorithms with increased performance)
- Better memory management to allow for longer simulations without running out of memory
- Addition of a dataplot module that displays the results of multiple simulations to facilitate results visualization. This module automatically can also extract the maximum (or minimum) of the results selected to generate a graph that shows variations, for example with respect to a specific change in variable value in a batch.

EONS V1.1.3 June, 2011: Release 362
Bugs Fixes: None. 
Models modifications:
- Internals: All models are generated using SBML and incorporated in EONS
- New numerical methods significantly decrease computation time (Heun-Euler, RKF and BDF2TRAP variable step methods)
- Simplified presynaptic calcium diffusion available
- Neurotransmitter diffusion based on Savtchenko paper (faster than 2D convolution)
Code cleanup: A lot of cleanup in the main interface classes.
Enhancements:
- Significant reduction in memory usage
- Significant speed improvement
- Anti-aliasing used by default (after detection of the client OS and the determination of the appropriate font to use)
- One can now save the results in Matlab format
- Interface cleaned up a bit

EONS V1.1.2 February 08, 2010: Release 141
Bugs Fixes: Issues on Linux and Mac clients should be fixed. 
Models modifications:
- A LOT OF Internal modifications: we are heading towards full compatibility with SBML. i.e. in a near future, you will be able to develop your own elementary model (NMDA receptor, calcium channels, etc…) and incorporate it in EONS
- New VDCCs implement a variable step method (significant gain in computation time)
- Optimized parameters of presynaptic calcium diffusion
- Spine neck resistance added in postsynaptic depolarization calculation
Code cleanup: Some cleanup in the main interface classes.

Models modifications: Glycine transporter GlyT1 recalibrated.
Code cleanup: Metabotropic receptor type 1 has its own location and icon.
Enhancements: Added 13 states model for AMPA receptor.

EONS V1.0 January 7, 2008: Release 49
Bugs Fixes: none. 
Models modifications: new layout of presynaptic VDCCs.
Code cleanup: none.
Enhancements: Added glycine transporter GlyT1 on glial cell adjacent to the synapse that controls the amount og glycine present. Added histamine receptor H3 that controls the level of inhibition of VDCCs.

EONS V1.0 December 3, 2007: Release 40
Bugs Fixes: logo in about window not present (ImageIcon exception); proper initialization of AMPA5 receptors. 
Models modifications: NT release uses model from Yamada and Zucker 1992; new synapse layout to reproduce the Yamada and Zucker 1992 [Ca]pre profile (No vdcc T type, more L type); presynaptic ca buffer modified to fit Yamada and Zucker 1992 [Ca]pre profile; NMDA has 3 conductances (Ca, Na and K).
Code cleanup: Load defaults from each model panel rather than main frame.
Enhancements: Output graphs are generated in a smart way (points with no information are removed (precision = range/400)); Graph-> View dataset generates only an output for the selected graph;  Graph-> View dataset. The X axis in the table is now in ms (and formatted); calcium buffer has now a clearing rate accessible from the user interface.

Note: Improved user interface. Ability to close results panel to free memory space. Feedback when the system is running low in memory space.

EONS V1.0 May 7, 2007
Note: With long simulations, the simulations recorded too many points which resulted in very important memory usage. The user can now select how many points will be stored at the end of the simulation, resulting in a significantly lower amount of memory used.

EONS V1.0 February 5, 2007
Note: With long simulations, the graphs contained too many points which induced very slow update of the display when the user was switching graphs or scrolling up and down. A new class checks for the significance of the points to be displayed and hence only displays the significant ones, resulting in much faster drawing. Updated to the latest versions of JDK (1.5.0_11), JFreechart (1.0.3) and JCommon (1.0.8)

EONS Beta7 version: September 23rd 2003
Note: This version of the model includes all features previously available. Calcium pumps and localized buffers can be eliminated. The neurotransmitter release approximation using a fourth power rule has been modified; a bug in the calcium channel dynamics has also been fixed.

EONS Beta6 version: August 15th 2002
Note: This version of the model includes all features previously available. The synaptic cleft has now variable width. It can vary from 6 to 40 nm (in 2nm increments).

EONS Beta5 version: April 14th 2002
Note: This version of the model includes all features previously available. The login on the applet is disabled. Labels are added for a more user-friendly interface. The online help is updated.

EONS Beta4 version: October 26th 2001
Note: This version of the model includes all features previously available. An animation illustrates the evolution of calcium concentration in the presynaptic terminal as well as the evolution of neurotransmitter concentration in the cleft during the simulation.

EONS Beta3 version: September 10th 2001
Note: This version of the model includes all features previously available. The depiction of the synaptic components is "3D-like" and dynamic.

EONS Beta2 version: June 4th 2001
Note: This version of the model includes both the pre-synaptic and post-synaptic part. Single pulse, paired pulse and train of pulses are available. The geometry of the synapse can be modified; the number of calcium channels, calcium pumps, AMPA and NMDA receptors can be changed.

EONS Beta version: May 16th 2001
Note: This version of the model is runnable. It includes both the pre-synaptic and post-synaptic part. Single pulse, paired pulse and train of pulses are available.

EONS Alpha version: May 10th 2001
Note: This version of the model is runnable. It includes both the pre-synaptic and post-synaptic part (with a single pulse depolarization). Both parts are not yet connected (model pre and post-synaptic do not run concurrently).
